Tik Tok has been a huge trend lately and many talented people from all over the world create and share content. Many tiktokers have gained popularity and recognition. Anastasia Shakalis is one of them! She is a Greek American who lives in New York City and has become popular with her Greek related content. To Tik Tok είναι ένα απο τα πιο δημοφιλή κοινωνικά δίκτυα πλέον και έχει πάρει μεγάλες διαστάσεις. Πολλοί που το χρησιμοποιούν δημιουργούν περιεχόμενο και το μοιράζονται στο κοινό τους. Ένα χαρακτηριστικό του κοινωνικού αυτού δικτύου είναι οτι μπορείς να συγκεντρώσεις πολλά views μέσα σε λίγο χρονικό διάστημα. Πολλοί είναι αυτοί επίσης που έχουν γίνοι διάσημοι απο το περιεχόμενό τους. Μια απο αυτούς είναι και η Ελληνοαμερικάνα Αναστασία Σακαλη. Tell us a few words about yourself.
I’m a proud second-generation Greek/Cypriot-American born and raised in New York.
You are a speech therapist in Manhattan. What do you like the most about your job?
I love my job because it is extremely and consistently rewarding. Through therapy I am able to build amazing relationships with my students.
How you came with the idea of making a Tik Tok profile?
I decided to make a TikTok when we were stuck in the house on lockdown in quarantine due to COVID-19. I needed something to do and thought this would be a fun way to occupy my time.
Your TikTok account has gained popularity. What do you think it was the secret?
I think that my account has gained popularity because I have a clear and consistent theme (Greeks in America) & I make relatable and accessible content for Greek-Americans and Americans of other traditional cultures. I also engage with my followers, which is essential to building a strong audience on the platform.
What is the reaction of your American followers regarding the Greek culture?
Right now, only 16% of my followers are from America and most of them tend to be Greek Americans so they react well and say my content is relatable! As most of my followers are in Greece, I get the occasional native Greek hater, but my content is all in good fun!
What things do you miss the most about Greece?
I miss my family the most (My Yiayia and Theas and Theos) and of course Yiayia’s cooking! Nothing like her pastichio!
What aspect of TikTok excites you the most?
I get the most excitement from making my videos. I really enjoy coming up with different ideas and executing them in my free time. But of course, I get very excited when my followers interact with my videos and give me their input as well.
Tik tok is a social medium that has gained popularity among the other social media. What things should bear in mind someone who wants to begin with that tool? What advice would you give?
I think it is important to remember that Tiktok is a platform that thrives when people share content, rehash other’s jokes, reuse sounds, and just have a good time. It’s important to not take the platform too seriously, unless you intend to us it to promote your career. For me it’s just for fun and a form of stress relief, it just so happens that my audience likes what I create. For advice…I would say to come up with, and stick to, a theme for your page. Run with it!
